Protect yourself against the risk of contaminants in Omega 3 supplements

Topics Covered: Omega 3 Regulations and certification, Non-fish Omega 3

Because common over-the-counter Omega 3's are a naturally derived product from fish, there is a small risk of contamination.  The type of fish, source location and poor processing can all lead to high levels of toxic mercury, lead, PCB, dioxins and other contaminants.

Reputable companies take great safety precautions to avoid any issues but as a consumer, How can you protect yourself and family?

  1. Choose reputable brands with very high EPA and DHA potency
  2. Look for third party certification of Omega 3 products from organizations such as PureCheck, GOED (Global Organization for EPA and DHA), IFOS (International Fish Oils Standards)
  3. Consider fermentation based or plant based alternatives.  However these products are expensive and less bioavailable
