Although there are non-fish sources of EPA/DHA, the three options are expensive and uncommon.

  1. Chemically altered EPA/DHA (originally derived from fish but extensively modified to Ethyl Ester) available as prescription only  E.g. Omacor or Lovaza

  2. Algea-derived.  E.g. Algal-911, Algal-700, Nutraveg

  3. Fungal Fermentation-derived.  E.g. DSM Life's Omega, Cargill EPA/DHA

To clarify this blog entry, these are non-fish sources of EPA/DHA and NOT Vegan Omega 3 which is generally ALA.  See this entry on Vegan ALA Omega 3.

Non-fish options of EPA/DHA do offer some advantages over traditional, fish derived sources.  Sustainability, consistency, purity with no risk of contamination and vegan-friendly are reasons to consider these sources.

However, there are disadvantages to non-fish sources as well:  Significantly higher costs, prescription medication barriers and reduced bioavailability.

mEYEspa does not currently carry any non-fish sources of EPA/DHA.  One of our Omega 3 supplements does have ethyl ester EPA added  .  See TG-GOLD Omega 3
