Why are drops used before eye surgery?

Most all eye surgeons will ask patients to use prescription eye drops several days prior to cataract surgery.

These prescribed medications help reduce the risk of infection during surgery and are important to limit post-surgery inflammation.

You will continue these drops post-surgery and they will taper down.

It is important that you follow the instructions exactly!  Not taking drops can lead to a last-minute cancellation of your cataract surgery.

Why are drops recommended before pre-surgery eye measurements?

The precise measurements that are taken pre-advanced cataract surgery can be negatively influenced by dry eye.

It is a good practice to use non-preserved re-wetting drops prior to your eye measurements appointment to improve instrument accuracy.  Good measurements translate to better implant selection and identification of sub-clinical corneal issues that could effect outcomes.

Separate instilling these drops from the prescription medications by at least a couple of minutes or you risk diluting the medicine.

Why are pre-surgery wipes recommended?

Keeping your eyelids pristine and clean prior to surgery reduces the risk of infection and post surgical irritation.

A bad case of blepharitis on the day of surgery could be a reason for your Ophthalmologist to postpone your procedure.

At our clinic we recommend Naclino Wipes for both pre and post-surgery use.  They are gentle, simple and effective single use wipes with no preservatives.
